I am trying to log messages with structured data . But it is showing null value for structured data. I am working with rsyslog 8.9.0.Can someone exlain me how these two modules mmpstrucdata and mmrfc5424addhmac will be effected?

I have a fully working squid setup, i can browse, download, the only problem i'm having is logging in to battle.net. (the windows client, not the website - that one works so it's not due to the login servers being down...).

The ports used by battle.net which should be available: 80, 443, 1119, 3724 & 6881-6999

according to me, the config does allow these ports ?

Is there a problem in my config, or could it just be because i'm currently testing this from a remote location through a ssh tunnel ?

I'm using XFCE 4.8. I'd like to try Dolphin as my default file manger. The fonts are to small in the file list (detailed, icon, or compact) view, but not in the left navigation pane. How can I increase the font size? "Zooming in" only increases the size of the icon, not the file or directory name.

In the Desktop Effects -> Advanced whenever I change the "Compositing type" from XRender to OpenGL, after a screen flicker it changes back to XRender.

I'm using autotools to create package of my software then i wanted to make debian package but after runing debuild i get those warnings:

google pointed me to this:

so do I have to just copy the output of dpkg-buildflags to my src/Makefile.am or is there a way to automatically include it...

What do I need to think about when installing Linux on a SSD? You want to limit the writes/reads so the SSD don't get worn out right?

What filesystems are preferred? What filesystems are not?

What about swap?

Anything else that is good to think about?

Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch[Solved]

Once Debian booted up and able to login(put username and password) ..but the cursor shows watch..means waiting for something..switch to vc like Atl-ctrl-f1 and tail to /var/log/xorg.0.log saying that it is suspending AIGLX clinets for VT switch?

How to resolve this problem?

Am running Debian Squeeze.

emacs can't open display

Just recently this has started happening.

I run: /usr/bin/emacsclient --alternate-editor="" --no-wait -c and get `ERROR: Display :0.0 can't be opened'

No other application do this.

output from xdpyinfo:

Discovered that old emacs servers/daemons are still running.

screen corruption after hibernate -- Is there another way to refresh the X11 display?

When I restore from hibernate the screen is often corrupted. I suspect the graphics memory is not being saved. Suspend-to-ram works fine.

It also looks like the font-cache is corrupted, as all letters are corrupted consistently.

Logging out and back in again fixes it, but I don't want to have to do that. I have been logging-out then hibernating, but this is more effort and eliminates most of the benefit of hibernate.

Is there another way to refresh the X11 display? The Ctrl+Alt+F1 ... does not work. It switches back to X11 instantly, but still corrupted

openVPN on debian Lenny

Hi. I'm setting up a VPN with openVPN on a debian lenny server. I successfully installed it in the server, then created the certificates and both client (winXP) and server config files. For the client I use openVPN gui. I tested the tunnel and everything went just fine. I even can ping the openVPN server from the XP client. But that´s all. I can't ping any machine behind the openvpn server. Some facts that you may find useful to help me with this issue are:

The openVPN server is not the default gateway of the LAN. The dg is a pfsense server
I don´t have iptables enabled (policy of all chains are ACCEPT).
I have configured ip forwarding (echo "1" >/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward)
I my server.conf I have the line: push route "192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0")
My openVPN server has two NIC's. One connected to the LAN, and the other to the WAN. I have checked and all seems to be OK. I think that the problem is connected with routing the traffic from the vpn to my LAN but I don't know how to do that (besides the push route line in the server.conf).

Cannot set permissions on /srv folder in Debian

I am trying to view some web pages I made on Debian in the /srv folder with Apache running. I tried telling the terminal to change the permissions to make my regular user account the owner, but it keeps saying in properties I am not the owner and cannot put files in the folder. The terminal is ignoring me, not even telling me it isn't making changes. Here is what I typed to try and correct it from the root terminal:

chown doug /srv

chmod 755 /srv

Can't run NFS Most Wanted on Wine

I run Debian lenny amd64, video card ATI x1250 on Catalyst 9.2.

When i try to launch NFS Most Wanted v.1.3 I get error:

Debian Lenny seg faults when installing

Hi, apt on my Debian Lenny seg faults every couple of times when i try to install something. I tried everything! I removed almost everything from sources.list, i removed the apt cache but still it gives me errors. Why is this happening? What's causing it?

DEBIAN 5.04 - Ralink RT73 can see wireless but cannot connect to WEP

I am puzzled as to why my computer MSI notebook which uses the Ralink RT73 drivers cannot connect to my WEP network even though it can see my network and other networks?

All other distros like Ubuntu (and variants), FEDORA 13, Linuxmint 9, PCLinuxOS can easily connect to my WEP network.

Is this because of Debian's outdated kernel?

Hoping for a quick and newbie-friendly fix.

Hi,

Because I am using one of the new WD disks I am trying to aling my root partition with the real sectors, as described here:

So I copied all files to a temp location, deleted my partition (/dev/sda3), recreated it a few cylinders later (same name) and copied the files to the newly created partition. But now when I try to boot, I get my old grub menu but after selecting my kernel version it hangs... Any idea how I can fix it?

Swiftfox(A variant of Firefox i.e getswiftfox.com ) is taking ages to load in Debian Lenny.

Swiftfox (a Firefox variant) is taking ages to load in my Debian Lenny system.

I have been using Swiftfox on several other Linux distributions without any problem; it works flawlessly on Arch, Fedora, Gentoo (my other OSes). But it's giving me trouble in Debian Lenny. I haven't yet found any clue as to why.

Please help me shed some light on the problem. I periodically prune the Swiftfox/Firefox internal database, and I keep it up-to-date with the latest versions available.

I am confused with this problem in Debian Lenny. What should I try to troubleshoot this further?

Audio Not working After Debian Upgrade (Lenny, Squeeze & Sid)

I've upgraded many of the packages on my system using Synaptic, which upgraded various components including the kernel and KDE4. As a result I now no longer have audio.

uname -a gives me:

KDE is on version 4.4.3

I don't have PulseAudio installed.

Alsa is on version 1.0.21

Using KDE's Settings tool for audio I've tried both the Xine and GStreamer backends, which give me options of outputting to either HDA Intel (ALC268) or to Jack. Neither option works.

Running alsactl init both as root and as the normal user gives me the following error:

I'm fairly experienced as a Linux user, but I haven't had to reconfigure my sound since I moved from Slackware to Ubuntu 6 04, 4 years ago, and I don't think I've done a kernel recompile since then either.

The machine in question is my Acer Aspire 5720 Laptop. sound was working perfectly prior to the upgrade, Google has given me various ideas but none of them have worked yet.

EDIT I've tried the following:

Switching between the different backends.
I've also tried adding the line "options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=72" to the bottom of alsa-base.conf as suggested on one of the pages I went to, but it appears to have no effect.
I tried installing PulseAudio, but no combination of PulseAudio and other settings worked.

EDIT2 Right, I've got it partially working, by following olejorgenb's steps:

Unload all processes using the soundcard.
Change to the directory where the file called vendor_name contains Realtek (on mine it's at /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1b.0/sound/card0/hwC0D0)
then as root do echo acer > modelname && echo 1 > reconfig

Restarting kmix then lets me unmute the sound and it works.

But how can I make this change stick?

EDIT3 As per olejorgenb's suggestion I've tried adding:

echo acer > "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1b.0/sound/card0/hwC0D0/modelname"
echo 1 > "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1b.0/sound/card0/hwC0D0/reconfig"
/usr/sbin/alsactl init

to /etc/rc.local which didn't work. Then I tried putting it in /etc/init.d/speech-dispatcher as this is one of the processes I have to kill to get sound working manually. I see the usual message about

scroll past during startup, but still no sound.

Anymore suggestions from anyone, how to get my sound to come up automagically on startup?

SOLUTION: It turns out that the above was a red herring, the problem lay with the fact that I wasn't a member of the audio group (or possibly pulse or pulse-access) adding myself to this group, and logging back in (I may have been able to bypass the login but I wanted to make sure) restored working sound to my system.

Have the requirements for either the kernel or Alsa changed so that to make audio work, you now need to be a member of the audio group. Or have Debian made changes? Or did the update change my membership?

Depending on which of these is probably the cause, depends where I submit a bug to.

I am running mint 8 on a first gen netbook. I have already installed the max 2GB ram. Mint uses 200MB to 500MB on average use on my machine. I know that /dev/shm is a dynamic 'ram drive'. What can I symlink to improve performance? I am asking about this only and not about other performance improvements. Thank you very much.

I know it's a very common problem but I didn't find any easy solution to install adobe air on debian testing 64 bits? I thought Adobe would release official 64 bits packages but it is not done yet... Impossible to find any unofficial packages from the community either?

In my case it would be to install Tweetdeck!
