I have a cable-modem which via a switch is connected to my router/firewall for serving internet to my actual LAN, but the same switch also connects via powerlan several set-top-boxes to the same cable-modem. This means that near some TVs I have two powerlan adapters, one serving the needed connection to the set-top-box and another giving internet access to PS3, Wii, XBox, ...

The cable-modem itself gives different IP addresses based on the MAC address of the client. As such the set-top-boxes get a 10.x.x.x address and other clients (my Linux firewall) get actual global internet addresses. So, there are already two IP ranges going over the same network at the end of the cable-modem, but since I'm not sure of the safety of that part of the network (read: I don't trust the cable company), I want the rest of my network behind the Linux firewall ...

So, to finally come to the question: is there a way to have the cable-modem connect directly to my Linux firewall (so getting rid of the switch inbetween) and then have the Linux firewall pass traffic for the set-top-boxes (so specific MAC addresses) as-is to the LAN, including that those devices would then get a DHCP address directly from the cable-modem (through the Linux "bridge"), while at the same time for all other devices in the LAN the Linux firewall actually acts as firewall, proxy, dhcp server, etc. giving out 192.168.0.x addresses and having itself one single real internet address which it gets via DHCP from the cable-mode?

If I setup a bridge between WAN and LAN, I assume I can still filter on that bridge via iptables, but can I run a dhcp client on one end of the bridge and a dhcp server on the other? If so, how? Anyone able to give me a clear description on how to get something like this up? I'm going to run Ubuntu Server on the firewall (which also acts as home-server and controller for my solar-panels, so a full-fledged Linux is wanted), but if I can get general instructions to get me on the road, I probably can figure out the Ubuntu specifics myself...

Thanks in advance, K
MisterKWed, 14 Nov 2012 02:37:34 -0500http://linuxexchange.org/questions/2972/two-virtual-networks-over-one-lanbridgenetworklinuxrestart one network interface (SOLVED)http://linuxexchange.org/questions/2623/restart-one-network-interface-solved
hi,

I have several network interfaces connected to different netwroks on my Red Hat server. I have added a new link and configured it - /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth4. Now, when I am doing ifconfig eth4 down / up the ip I had set is not written on the interface the only way to set those definitions is by service network restart, which restart's the other interfaces.

is there any way to start only the specific interface with it's new definitions ?
itamarmFri, 01 Jul 2011 11:27:10 -0400http://linuxexchange.org/questions/2623/restart-one-network-interface-solvednetworkMobile broadband under Ubuntu 10.04http://linuxexchange.org/questions/1432/mobile-broadband-under-ubuntu-1004
Hi,

As this is my first ever post, please excuse me if I have overlooked some obvious source of info.

I seek help with getting a virgin Mobile Broadband G3 dongle working under Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell laptop. I think I am quite close to having done it, but I can't quite get there. The problem may simply be that I do not know what to respond to the network manager.

The dongle is badged as Alcatel. When I plug it in, it initially flashes orange, then - now that I have installed usb_modeswitch - it changes to flashing green, which I think looks promising. (However under some circumstances it changes from green to red later)

The outputs from lsusb with and without the dongle inserted differ by the line:-

Bus 002 Device 005: ID 1bbb:0017 T & A Mobile Phones

I'm not sure what I expect to happen, but nothing does. So I assume I need to configure it with the network manager. Here I get stuck.

Going to the main menue on the upper panel and following system->preferences->network connection->Mobile Broadband->Add, I am offered a few screens in which I am asked the Provider's country, namelyBritain(UK), The Provider for which I choose Virgin Mobile from a list of options

I am then asked my plan, which I do not know, and I have not found anyone at Virgin who will tell me (even when they understand my question). Consequently I have just accepted the suggested "default". The same screen asks me for my plan's APN, but the dialogue box for the APN is not active, so I cannot enter it there. The box contains a feint "vdata", the significance of which I don't know, so I have tried clicking Apply.

That takes me to a screen which, under the tag "Mobile Broadband" has some details which I appear to be able to change, including vdata

Under "Basic" I have number as *99#, and username and password both blank. From reading posts by people who have made this work, I believe those are correct responses.

Under "Advanced" I have APN as vdata and Network and Pin both blank. Again from other posts I think the two blanks are probably correct, but I believe that vdata should be something else. I have tried changing it to VirginMobile and to VirginBroadband but neither appears to get me any closer to a connection. Again I have hit a brickwall trying to get anyone at Virgin Media to tell me what the APN should be.

Any suggestions welcome.
BobHWed, 10 Nov 2010 16:20:02 -0500http://linuxexchange.org/questions/1432/mobile-broadband-under-ubuntu-1004networkubunturandom wireless disconnections (lucid lynx)http://linuxexchange.org/questions/809/random-wireless-disconnections-lucid-lynx
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and I'm having problems with my wireless connection. It simply stops working randomly.

I thought the cause might be a number of connections or something like that, but it's not. Sometimes it stops working while you're off doing something unrelated to the network.

Also, once it stops working, I'm unable to connect anymore until I reboot the machine. Some say it might be a problem with NetworkManager, but I can't use the recommended wicd because it won't even connect (it seems like hidden SSID + wep bothers wicd).

I'd also like to note that I have a windows PC connected to the same router and it never drops a connection like that, so there's obviously nothing wrong with the router.

Any hints would be helpful. I'd like to drop NM altogether if possible, but I'm not aware of any good alternative.

Edit:

lecterror@feck:~$ lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2 07:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Wireless WiFi Link 5100 [8086:4232] Kernel driver in use: iwlagn Kernel modules: iwlagn 09:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5764M Gigabit Ethernet PCIe [14e4:1684] (rev 10) Kernel driver in use: tg3 Kernel modules: tg3 lecterror@feck:~$ rfkill list 0: acer-wireless: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 1: acer-bluetooth: Bluetooth Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: no 3: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no

sudo iwlist scan
got me a large list of available networks, I'm assuming you don't need it if that's the expected output :)

Edit 2:

No dice! :( My "solution" in the answers below didn't work, in fact it made everything worse, disconnections every few seconds. dmesg said this:

[ 1170.188961] wlan0: deauthenticating from XXXXXX by local choice (reason=3)

I have no idea what it means, but it sure as hell wasn't by MY local choice!

For now I've reverted to NetworkManager and the funny thing is that is seems more stable than before(?). Possibly due to WEP->WPA switch, but I can't be sure..

Any ideas?
dr.
