Hi, I have an emachines desktop computer. Windows xp became corrupted and lost a file so I couldn't boot windows. I installed ubuntu via usb stick to replace xp. Ubuntu loads, and will work, but really slow, slow, slow. I think the emachines desktop has sufficient ram and memory to run ubuntu, but it is too slow to be of use. I would like to replace ubuntu with puppy linux, but I can't get puppy installed. I tried using a usb stick since the cd/dvd drive doesn't work. Thanks in advance for your help. Regards, John

CD drive not being read in Ubuntu 14.04

I have recently upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 (64 bit) in a System 76 laptop. The CD drive will no longer mount or recognize any CD - music, DVD or blank. I have reloaded the codecs and libdvdcss libdvdread4 libdvdnav4. No luck.

If someone could help me with a step-by-step solution to this issue, I would appreciate it very much

Error when configuring Linphone to use SIP (TLS) and ZRTP encryption

I am trying to configure Linphone to wrap all media communications in an encryption layer (on Xubuntu). According to their website, Linphone supports:

Secure communications (TLS, SRTP, zRTP)

However, when I try to configure Linphone in Options > Prefs > Network Settings > Network protocol and select SIP (TLS) then Linphone immediately complains with the following error message:

Could not start tls transport on port 5060, maybe this port is already used.

Linphone works just fine when I switch back to SIP (UDP).

What is wrong and how can I fix it?

Hi, I want to take a screenshot of my desktop using FFMPEG, however I have no clue of how to set up a command like this and every time I search on google I only get how to extract a frame from a video... I ONLY want to take a single screenshot from my desktop using FFMPEG, so what is the command for that? Also, I am using ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

I have installed ubuntu12.04 LTS on proxmox and run NComputing on it it . It will connect well but navigaion keys works diffrently. up-key will take screenshot left-key will erase all the text have been written and ... while with the VNC viewre ubuntu12.04 will works correctly. so by connecting to NComputing programmers cant write code becuase of navigation keys Can anyone help me? I have successfully loaded a DVD into my laptop and the screen shows Welcome to Ubuntu 12.04 but I have not yet been able to find the desktop display that I expected. The machine runs well in bash as though I had chosen to run as a Terminal, but the instruction "exit" does not allow me the usual changeover.

FTDI driver installation issues

Hi, I am trying to install a VCP driver for FT232R chip from ftdichips.com. Unfortunatey there is no installation manual/guidelines for linux driver available. When I try to build the source of the driver by

sudo make

it outputs the following error:

fatal error: /lib/modules/3.0.0-12-generic/build/include/linux/modversions.h: No such file or directory

I think it might be because I have my linux headers in diffrent directory installed? In which case I would have to create a symlink? OS: Ubuntu 11.10

Issues when running autogen.sh

Since on running ./autogen.sh I was getting file/folder not found, therefore I downloaded the file autogen.sh from the github repository given below:

Now when I run ./autogen.sh I am getting "Permission denied" And if I run sh ./autogen.sh I am getting:

 glibtoolize or libtoolize not found. Giving up!

How re-map the shortcut key about gnome-terminal

According to the Gnome-Termianl Usage, I found that ctrl+shift+up/down can scroll up/down a line in the terminal.

Now, I want to re-map the shortcut key, just like: alt+j/k to scroll up/down a line, that's the old habit of vimer. :) I tried searching the settings in Edit -> Keyboard Shortcuts of Terminal, but found nothing. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance.

NFS Stale File Handle Problem

Hi guys, I have the files for a website on a central machine and mount this directory on several other small servers around using nfs. problem is, I have started to get some strange errors recently, the whole system gets frozen and I get this error:

Stale File Handle

I havent been able to get enough information for debugging from the server itself, but I am hoping there would be a way to resolve this issue, is there anything in particular that I have to bear in mind when mounting file for a website to a central server?

I there a better way to handle this situation? keeping the website files on one server and have all others share into same files?

I have upgraded my OS to version 12.04. after completion of upgrade the laptop get restarted. But the root is not mounting. It shows a message The disk drive for / is not ready yet or not present

What is the solution for this problem?

Or atleast can i restore my lap to the previous version?

Grub lost after windows 8

Hi there , i used to have installed on my pc backtrack 5 R2 + ubuntu 11.10 when i installed windows 8 i lost grub

using ext2explore and other browsing tools , i can see all linux partitions , with files in there. using super grub disk , i am trying to reinstall grub , but it says , file not found Ass seen here Any ideas ?

I had a dual boot with win 7, Ubuntu, and Linux mint. I deleted the two partitions for Linux and Ubuntu and extended the windows partition back into the unallocated space. When I restart my computer , I get an error that reads

"loading operating system.. GRUB loading. Error: no such partition. Entering rescue mode... Grub rescue>"

And I'm not sure how to get windows to boot back normally from here. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

how do i force upperdir overlayfs to reread/reload lowerdir

i am having the following problem with an overlayfs: I can mount an overlayfs fine using the following line in my etc/fstab

none /home/student overlayfs lowerdir=/home/student,upperdir=/home/.student_rw 0 0

this works great and the mount command displays the overlayfs corretly:

 pc:~$ mount -l -t overlayfs
 none on /home/student type overlayfs (rw,lowerdir=/home/student,upperdir=/home/.student_rw)

so now when a student logs out of the machine i delete the contents of /home/.student_rw using a script - which also works fine.

the problem is that the student logging in, should find a clean home directory with the settings preconfigured in (/home/student) as the overlayfs does not touch the lowerdir folder.

the exact same approach worked very well for aufs, which are no longer supported in precise.

interestingly, the overlayfs approach works fine as long as i reboot the machine. so how can i fix this problem? for me a possible solution seems to be to let the upperdir reread the lowerdir. how would i do that?

Several weeks ago the Update Manager stopped functioning. When I go to click on the "Authentication" button, the dialog box will shake and then do nothing.

Any ideas what the problem is and how I can fix it?

switching between different input methods phonetic vs typewriter in ibus preferences Hindi typing

I use Ubuntu 11.10 and Gnome environment. I am able to type documents in Hindi by a method shown here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL7icGNhIfI I installed ibus-m17n and ibus packages and have enabled support for Hindi language in gnome-language-selector.I have following input methods enabled in ibus preference window

Hindi inscript (m17n)
Hindi phonetic (m17n)
Hindi itrans (m17n)
Hindi remington (m17n)
* Hindi typewriter (m17n)

I open libreoffice and press Ctrl+Space so that I can type in Hindi. I am able to type in Hindi.

then I am able to type in Hindi with following kind of keyboard

/usr/share/m17n/hi-typewriter.mim

i.e. by pressing key "h" letter प gets typed.
Which is expected behavior.

pressing key "h" letter again प gets typed.
Which is not expected.As per my understanding the keymap for phonetic input method in this case is

/usr/share/m17n/hi-phonetic.mim and given that input method phonetic is already selected
(with phonetic selection) upon pressing key "h" letter "य" should get typed.

That means that selection of different input methods has no effect on typing. So is ibus not working properly or I missed some thing? How can I get expected behavior when selecing different input methods in ibus preference window?

Thunderbird hangs the screen on sending, Ubuntu, Gnome, Compiz

Hello, Linux community!

Ubuntu 10.04, Gnome, Compiz with 4 virtual desktops.

I have Thunderbird installed from the binary repository. When I send messages, the screen hangs, I cannot click anything - it does not respond.

If I switch to another virtual desktop with a shortcut (Alt+Ctrl+Right arrow) and release the keys - everything gets back to normal. I can switch back and Thunderbird works ok. If I switch to another screen and then I switch back without releasing Ctrl+Alt, the system hangs completely. Nothing helps, I even can't switch desktops anymore. The only option I know is to reboot.

Did anyone have that kind of a problem? Where should I look? Should I report a but to Thunderbird or Compiz? All updates are installed

Temporarily Disabling Gold Linker on Ubuntu

I'm trying out the Gold Linker to see if it will improve link time of our application. And it does, significantly. Occasionally, I need to use the GNU Linker. How would I go about doing this?

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and I installed the Gold Linker from the package manager.

loading googleearth on ubuntu 10.10

I have tried every option that I can find trying to load googleearth on ubuntu 10.10, including loading an older version of googleearth, the latest version and the googleearth stable package. I have tried repeatedly from Terminal and also from the ubuntu software package installer.

Googleearth starts to load, the logo shows up on the screen, and the note says googleearth initializing. However after 4 seconds it gives up. What is strange is that it used to load fine.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Unusable PLACES Menu in ubuntu 10.10

I am not able to use the PLACES Menu in ubuntu 10.10 I have reloaded it with two fifferent downloads from the net to the same effect. The only Menu selection that works is COMPUTER. All other Menu selections take me to the screen for SM Player. Please tell me how I can fix this problem.

Dear All,

I have already install win XP then I have install UBUNTU 7.04 in free space but next time WIN XP not in bootable option, and system directly enter into ubuntu

then vise vesa....

First I install Ubuntu7.04 in free space then I install WIN XP in partitiion C: but now system directly enter into XP without giving dual option. but ubuntu partition is still show in device manager. image is attached (problem in atached uploading require Karma >60 ???????)

iptables and sudo not logging

I have Ubuntu 10.04.2LTS 32-bit Desktop Edition and it's the same on 3 different systems.

iptables and sudo aren't logging and I need them to be.

1) None of them have the auth.log in /etc which is used for logging sudo commands/login authorizations

2) None of them have the syslog.conf file in /etc (but one does exist under /usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/logfiles/syslog.conf)

3) I've looked in the "Log Viewer" in Gnome and in /etc

I need to enable and monitor these loggings somehow.

in my .ppd file, i see the following text

If the dscinfo dictionary is set, document name and *% user name are set as per the CUPS login name and Document name. *% The default print mode is Normal.

my question is now, how and where do i set this dscInfo dictionary, so that i see document name and user name.
