Hi, I've 8GB memory almost 6GB to 7GB is being eaten by mailscanner+sendmail. Please help to manage memory for each process. |

I think more information is required. I don't what your comfort level with computers is, but helpful information would be.... what variant of linux are you running ? can you copy and paste the output of the following command (run at terminal screen as a priveleged user ) ps -e -orss=,args= | sort -b -k1,1n | pr -TW$COLUMNS this will list all programs in the computer by their memory usage. Cool one-liner. Requests for more information should be a comment though.

A quick fix might be to edit your limits.conf file to set some boundaries which isn't a bad idea in itself. However, if your mail programs are taking up that much memory, you probably have some bigger problems. You may want to find out what is taking up the memory. "du" will be helpful in finding the large files and directories. It may be that sendmail is misconfigured. However, in some distros, mail is sent when certain errors are encountered, so there could be another offending program. |
