Hard drive 'Hard resetting link'

Got a new HD for my aging server. Is a WD500AAKS. This rig has no SATA, so I connected through a VIA card that was working ok with a WD 80G. Now I get these messages.

Do you think is a hardware problem? Should I return the drive? This means without the server until the shop graciously checks the drive and decide it is MY problem?

Since you didn't post dmesg or /var/log/messages we can only guess. Do you have a 3.0 Gbps drive but only a 1.5 Gbps controller on your mobo? If so you'll get that message, but the kernel should load the proper driver for the controller and the drive should be recognized and mountable.
