How to recompile gnome-media with the old alsa mixer panel applet

Guys, can you tell me how to recompile gnome-media with the old alsa mixer panel applet. Because the only disto that i can use debian, and i want to try something newer, but in every major distro pulseaudio is pluged in so deep that if you try to remove it, with it you remove a wholo lot of usability...
