im using karmic with NVIDIA 185.18.14 driver because its the latest driver that can output s-video on my card. for some reason any later driver breaks my tv-out output. i want to upgrade to lucid lynx and i want to know if this driver would work on it..

thanks..

It doesn't answer exactly your question but you can try with a live cd.

No installation, no risk

well sound good, i will try it.. but can i install a new driver when working on a live cd??

hum I'm not sure. You can exactly the same thing with a live cd than with a normal install except you'll lose everything at the next boot. So if it needs to reboot... Maybe with just killing the graphical interface (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=401974)

Install your kernel sources and the build-essential package (I think that's what it's called, it installs gcc and some other tools). Then get the NVIDIA 185.18.14 stuff from the NVIDIA website.

Follow the instructions from there to recompile the NVIDIA driver. It's usually something along the lines of:

  • drop out of the X session to a command line login,
  • login as root
  • do sh NVIDIA-185.18.14-name-of-package to run it
  • it'll go away try and find a suitable recompiled package
  • then offer to compile a new one if it can't find one
  • and finally attempt to install it for you.

As ever YMMV.
