Install your kernel sources and the build-essential package (I think that's what it's called, it installs gcc and some other tools). Then get the NVIDIA 185.18.14 stuff from the NVIDIA website. It doesn't answer exactly your question but you can try with a live cd. No installation, no risk answered 15 May '10, 14:58 martvefun well sound good, i will try it.. but can i install a new driver when working on a live cd??

hum I'm not sure. You can exactly the same thing with a live cd than with a normal install except you'll lose everything at the next boot. So if it needs to reboot... Maybe with just killing the graphical interface (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=401974)
